چکیده

A numerical framework based on the generalized finite element method (GFEM) is developed to capture the coupled effects of thermomechanical deformations and thermal gradients on the regression rate of a heterogeneous solid propellant. The thermomechanical formulation is based on a multiplicative split of the deformation gradient and regression of the heterogeneous solid propellant is simulated using the level set method. A spatial mesh convergence study is performed on a non-regressing solid heterogeneous propellant system to examine the consistency of the coupled thermomechanical GFEM solver. The overall accuracy (spatial and temporal) of the coupled thermomechanical solver for regressing solid propellants is obtained from a periodic sandwich propellant configuration, where the effects of thermomechanical deformations on its regression rate is investigated. Finally, the effects of thermomechanical deformations in a regressing two-dimensional heterogeneous propellant pack are studied and time-average regression rates are reported. 2009 Elsevier Inc. Multiscale modeling of solid propellants: From particle packing to failure

We present a theoretical and computational framework for modeling the multiscale constitutive behavior of highly filled elastomers, such as solid propellants and other energetic materials. Special emphasis is placed on the effect of the particle debonding or dewetting process taking place at the microscale and on the macroscopic constitutive response. The microscale is characterized by a period...

Modeling the Thermal Expansion Boundary Layer During the Combustion of Energetic Materials

An approach is presented for modeling the thermal expansion boundary layer in energetic materials such as solid propellants and explosives during their combustion. A thermodynamically consistent system of conservation laws is presented that describes the thermo-elastic solid with a temperature dependent thermal expansion coefficient in order to study the role of thermal expansion in heat transf...

استفاده از عوامل پیوندی بورات استری در پیشرانه های جامد

Bonding agents are one of the most important components of solid propellants that enhance the interaction between solid particles and binders. Many bonding agents have been reported so far and sufficient laboratory studies have been carried out on their mechanism of action, including, hydantoin, isocyanorathe, vinyl ether, base-shif, etc. Borate esters are other group of bonding agents that mos...

Formulation and Characterization of a New Nitroglycerin- Free Double Base Propellant

Double base propellants composed of nitrocellulose (NC) and nitroglycerin (NG) have been used in rocket and gun applications since the late 1800s [1] . Such propellants offer several benefits over their more modern composite counterparts, including simple formulation, high modulus and strength, and chlorine-free minimum smoke exhaust products [2,3] . Nevertheless, double base propellants are pl...

Explosive Testing of Class 1.3 Rocket Booster Propellant

Recent experimentation has provided a more thorough understanding of the explosive response of class 1.3 composite propellant to severe impact. This study looked at an 88% total solids HTPB/Al/AP propellant similar to what could be used in space launch boosters. The program tested propellant charges as large as 22 inches in diameter. It includes hydrodynamic modeling for developing a basic unde...
